Corrected entry: The main character misspells the word Rugose during the spelling bee, yet is not eliminated.

Correction: The rules require that when they are down to two contestants, the second contestant must spell a word correctly in order to win. Since the next word was also spelled incorrectly, they keep alternating until one or the other is eliminated by the other speller spelling correctly after an incorrectly spelled word.

Jenny Widgeon: I was wondering what the grammatical significance of that sentence is: "Why run from fire ants?"
Guy Trilby: Well, every vowel's in there, starting with the u, going to the a. Right, it's backwards?
Jenny Widgeon: ...Well, I guess it's pretty easy, y'know, for a sentence. Y'know, I wish there was one word that had all the vowels in it in alphabetical order.
Guy Trilby: "Facetious."
Jenny Widgeon: Sonofabitch.

Question: Why do the shirts the contestants wear change from green to purple during the event?

Answer: The shirts don't change color, it's just the lighting that seems to give a different tint to them. The film switches from the typical movie lighting that gives the shirt a duller and darker look (which you may see as green), to the "live TV" lighting which brightens the shirt color to a blue (or purple) color.
